Reigniting and nurturing our collective imagination in service of Black Liberation.
ABOLITION IS ABOUT PRESENCE, NOT ABSENCE. IT'S ABOUT BUILDING LIFE-AFFIRMING INSTITUTIONS.
Ruth Wilson Gilmore

Our Mission
The Garden is a bookstore and community well committed to inspiring, educating, and empowering Black people in Brooklyn & beyond to interrogate the world we live in and cultivate the worlds we need.
We do this by:
-
Connecting our community to literature and resources through our curated bookshop and free lending library
-
Producing accessible and instructive content on the vision and strategies of abolition, encouraging political education at all ages
-
Partnering with our neighbors in mutual aid programs and creating lasting alternatives to the Prison Industrial Complex
-
Nurturing intra-community connections that challenge us towards more loving and just relationships
-
Hosting and supporting community-led events and gatherings that celebrate black stories and protect black joy
